ABSTARR CEO Professor Gregory Phillips reflects on designated spaces for Aboriginal men to come together in article by Oliver Brown of ABC Broken Hill. The article highlights the efforts of Ngiyampaa man Anthony Hayward in creating an Aboriginal men’s walking group in his hometown, Broken Hill.
Mr Hayward speaks on the benefits of the group including not just promoting physical and mental fitness but creating a safe space for Aboriginal men. Professor Gregory Phillips extends on this by explaining “Support, understanding, connection, respect, this is in short supply in society for Aboriginal men, do any place they can get it is important”.
Professor Gregory Phillips shares that there are similar initiatives including football, bush tucker groups or ranger programs in other communities. Mr Hayward hopes to see an increase in these initiatives and that his walking group will inspire others to do the same.
