Education & Training
Grounded in Culture - Guided by Evidence
ABSTARR’s Education & Training pillar supports individuals and organisations to build genuine cultural safety, strengthen relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and embed practices that create safer, culturally responsive workplaces.
More than cultural awareness, our courses challenge learners to examine racism, whiteness and institutional power while re-imagining systems through Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sovereignty, knowledges and community-led solutions.
Grounded in adult-learning principles, our courses move participants from awareness to action — from charity to sovereignty — from reflection to transformation, supporting long-term confidence and professional growth. We give learners skills, confidence and practical solutions!
Flagship Course – Cultural Safety and Self Determination
Our Cultural Safety & Self-Determination (CS&SD) course was developed by Professor Gregory Phillips out of a lifetime of professional, community experience and his PhD. This course brings our evidence-based pedagogy into engaging and accessible learning environments. Grounded in decolonisation, it supports teams and individuals to explore racism, whiteness, and institutional power through an Aboriginal sovereignty lens.

Self-Directed Online
FLEXIBLE | MODULAR | SELF-PACED
For those who prefer a flexible, self-paced format, the Cultural Safety & Self-Determination course is also available online. The self-directed option follows the same module structure and learning outcomes as the facilitated program, with learners completing the content independently in an online environment.
You can complete the self-directed online learning in one of two pathways. Both cover the same modules and lead to the same outcomes — the difference is how you choose to move through the learning.
Nyoogawah / Water is a single, immersive journey where all ten modules are completed in one continuous course. This option suits learners or organisations looking to move through the full program efficiently.
Alternatively, learners may choose a more staged approach by completing the same ten modules across three connected short courses — Ngaachi / Earth, Wiiyn / Fire, and Ngurnduk / Wind. This pathway allows time between courses to reflect, practise, and integrate learning.
For larger learner groups, fees can be negotiated. Preparation requirements and precautions will need to be discussed with the contracting organisation or lead prior to enrolments opening. Please contact us for more information.
